Why burn hardwoods? Hardwoods burn more evenly and for quite a bit longer. There is nothing better on a cold night than a warm hearth with a blazing fire. You and your family and friends can enjoy a crisp, cool Virginia fall evening in front of a crackling outdoor fire pit. We have firewood for sale to meet your needs!
How to keep your wood ready to burn: as long as the pieces of wood are cut to length and stacked, air flows naturally through the stack and through the “raw” portions where the wood was cut. Covering the woodpile with a tarp slightly (not tightly) in rain and high humidity is common. If your pile gets wet, split pieces of wood tend to dry faster than full diameter logs.
You may have heard people say that wood should be seasoned for one or two years. This has been the subject of experiments, which determined that a one-foot long cut piece generally dries to good burning condition in two or three months. Two-foot long cut pieces can take six months. The one year period may be a reference to pieces four feet or longer, which do require at least a year. There appears to be no value in drying all sizes of firewood as long as two years.
Our firewood for sale is not freshly cut wood, because it has very high moisture content. As much as 60% of the weight of a tree is water. There is more water than wood fiber in each pound of green wood. If you burn it you get far less heat it is used up to evaporate water. Only then will the remaining green wood fibers burn.
